The World Population Conference was held under the joint auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council and the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population in Rome, between 31 August and 10 September 1954. Copland, based at Geneva for meetings of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, attended with W.D. Borrie to form the Australian delegation. Borrie, a demographer at the Australian National University, chaired Session 3A of the Conference on 'International Migration with special attention to Areas of Immigration'.
Series 36 consists of the few papers in the collection on the Rome conference. Here can be found a record of Copland's correspondence with Borrie (1953-1954) and others, including the Australian U.N. delegation in New York, summaries of conference papers, and some related material on population published by the United Nations Economic and Social Council and The Economist the following year.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- Lady Copland presented the personal papers of Sir Douglas Copland to the National Library in September 1973. Additions to the collection were received from the Copland Family between 1977 and 1981.
