Australian Regular Army Officers' training inquiry

Component identifier:
Series 41
Content Summary:

In May 1958 the Minister for the Army, J.O. Cramer, appointed a committee to inquire into the production of officers in the Australian Regular Army. The Committee was chaired by Major-General R. Wade and included Major-General J. Wilton and Brigadier T. Taylor. Copland, at the time Principal of the Australian Administrative Staff College, was its third member.

The papers Copland retained from his work on the committee make up Series 41. Minutes or 'Informal summaries of proceedings' were kept by two joint Secretaries, Majors M. Bradbury and A.B. Stretton, and these and memoranda from the Secretaries are included in the series. It also contains records of interviews, material on officer training schools overseas, copies of Department of the Army minutes, and a 1944 study on Duntroon Military College. Correspondence between Copland and J.O. Cramer, Major-Generals Wade and Wilton, and drafts and a final copy of the committee's report (April 1960) are also there. The series contains several items stamped 'Confidential'.

Immediate source of acquisition:
Lady Copland presented the personal papers of Sir Douglas Copland to the National Library in September 1973. Additions to the collection were received from the Copland Family between 1977 and 1981.
