Component identifier:
Series 52
Content Summary:

The Institute of Pacific Relations (I.P.R.) was founded in 1923 and governed from Hawaii through a Pacific Council representing Australia, Canada, China, and the United States of America. The Australian Institute of International Affairs formed the Australian National Group of the Institute, while individual members belonged to State Branches. Copland was active in the Victorian Branch, represented Victoria on the National Council, presented papers to Institute conferences and visited the Pacific Council while travelling to America in 1926.

Series 52 incorporates all papers in the collection relating to Copland and the I.P.R. It covers conferences at Honolulu, 1927, and Hangchow, 1931, Round Table symposia on population growth, Pacific relations and investment in China, and some of the activities of the Victorian Branch. The papers themselves are notices of meetings of the Executive Committee, financial statements, conference papers, memoranda, and correspondence. The correspondence includes letters to Copland from I.P.R. officials at the state, national and international levels, such as A. Constance Duncan, F.W. Eggleston, Joyce Beeby, and Dr J.B. Condliffe.

Immediate source of acquisition:
Lady Copland presented the personal papers of Sir Douglas Copland to the National Library in September 1973. Additions to the collection were received from the Copland Family between 1977 and 1981.
