Austral Development Company, 1933-1966

Component identifier:
Series 55
Content Summary:

Between 1934 and 1938 Copland supplied the London-based Austral Development Company with the raw material for its monthly bulletin Australian Economic conditions and Statistical Summary. The Company also acted as his agent in London until the middle of the 1960s. For example, Austral invested money for Copland, arranged accommodation, and purchased books.

Both Copland's 1930s work for Austral and in turn its representations on his behalf can be traced in Series 55. Material on the former includes an incomplete set of Australian Economic Conditions and Statistical Summary (April 1934-July 1938), and copies of cables and correspondence with an Austral Director, Colonel H.S Evans. Files of correspondence on other matters include letters from M.H. Baillieu, Llyn Evans, and Edith Mackenzie, and cover the years 1933-1934, 1952-1956, 1961-1963, and 1963-1966.

Papers of a purely financial nature have been filed into Series 4.

Immediate source of acquisition:
Lady Copland presented the personal papers of Sir Douglas Copland to the National Library in September 1973. Additions to the collection were received from the Copland Family between 1977 and 1981.
