Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science, 1937-1970

Component identifier:
Series 63
Content Summary:

The Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science (A.N.Z.A.A.S.) was formed in 1930 from Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science. The organisation, aims, and publications of both groups were obviously similar and Copland was active in both. He was a member of the Victorian Council of A.N.Z.A.A.S., became a Fellow in 1937, presented papers at A.N.Z.A.A.S. Congresses, and in 1952 was elected President.

Only a few A.N.Z.A.A.S. papers are included in the collection. Series 63 covers the period 1931-70, but basically consists of correspondence conducted during the 1950s. It documents Copland's participation in the Economics Statistics and Social Science Section of various A.N.Z.A.A.S. Congresses, the establishment of an L.F. Giblin Memorial Lecture, and the deliberations of the Council and General Committee. The papers primarily consist of correspondence and copies of A.N.Z.A.A.S. records, such as Council and General Committee minutes, reports, and newsletters. Copland's correspondents included Professor J. McMillan, K.W. Know, J.M. Garland, R.I. Downing, A.B. Walkom, Dr C. Barnard, Roland Wilson, Dr A. Smithies, and J.G. Kefford. Finally, Series 63 has copies of some papers that Copland presented at A.N.Z.A.A.S. meetings. They include his 1952 Presidential Address 'Authority and control in a free society' and the 1939 Canberra Congress paper 'The Commonwealth Bank-Cooperation or compulsion?'

Immediate source of acquisition:
Lady Copland presented the personal papers of Sir Douglas Copland to the National Library in September 1973. Additions to the collection were received from the Copland Family between 1977 and 1981.
