Walter Ham and Associates, 1960-1964

Component identifier:
Series 76
Content Summary:

In September 1960 Copland accepted a position with the Melbourne-based stock and share brokers Walter P. Ham Co (later Walter Ham and Associates). He worked with them as Economic Adviser, Consultant, and head of their Research Department during the next four years. The advice covered a diversity of topics from the Indonesian economy and the economic viability of motels to obscure matters such as an investment in the Chevron Hotel.

This series includes memoranda, correspondence, and weekly partners and advisers' reports, company publications, accounts of senior staff meetings, and cuttings. Much of the correspondence and memoranda is with Walter Ham; contact that was maintained while Copland was with the Institute of Labour Studies and the Trade Mission to North America. Other correspondents include W.J. Baker and Keith Jamieson. The series also contains a good sample of the economic advice the company made available to its clients. There are issues of Confidential newsletter, Client letter, Investment Service Bulletin, and Investment House Review which includes several articles by Copland.

Immediate source of acquisition:
Lady Copland presented the personal papers of Sir Douglas Copland to the National Library in September 1973. Additions to the collection were received from the Copland Family between 1977 and 1981.
