Content Summary:

Copland was associated with Star Collieries during 1958-1963 and for a time was retained as a consultant. The company's main interest was mining coal for briquettes. Material in the Copland papers on the company has been allocated to Series 78. There are reports, correspondence, minutes, photographs, and publicity brochures. The reports refer to work by the State Electricity Commission Victoria, the Brown Coal Research Laboratory of the University of Melbourne, and the Brown Coal Briquetting Project.

The correspondence is mainly with Star Collieries Managing Director, F.J.K. Steedman, and with the Victorian Premier, H. Bolte. The series also covers a project to develop coal mining at Bacchus Marsh through the subsidiary Australian Rural Resources Development Company and of whose Board Copland was Chairman.

Immediate source of acquisition:
Lady Copland presented the personal papers of Sir Douglas Copland to the National Library in September 1973. Additions to the collection were received from the Copland Family between 1977 and 1981.
