Biographical Papers, 1917-1970

Component identifier:
Series 92
Content Summary:

Copland never published an autobiography, although there is some evidence in his papers that he was considering such a project. During his time in Canada he did commit some reminiscences to papers (See untitled paper, stamped 'Confidential,' dated June 1955) and in the 1960s wrote a nine page piece titled 'Problems and people over the years. Notes on the experiences and activities of Douglas Copland'.

Three files of correspondence with publishers of biographical dictionaries kept while in China in the late 1940s, while in Canada in the mid-1950s, and while in retirement constitute the bulk of this series. It also includes some loose correspondence of a similar nature taken from general correspondence, some citations accompanying honorary degrees and second copies of several job applications that contain excellent detail on Copland's early life.

To varying degrees, all other series are relevant to the subject of Series 92.

Immediate source of acquisition:
Lady Copland presented the personal papers of Sir Douglas Copland to the National Library in September 1973. Additions to the collection were received from the Copland Family between 1977 and 1981.
