Children's book commenced by Noonan while serving with the AIF at Clarence, NSW. The illustrator, Douglas Albion, was also stationed at Clarence and helped Noonan run a canteen for the unit. Noonan continued the draft after being posted to New Guinea and completed the work shortly after receiving his discharge. The work was initially titled 'Percy the platypus' and was published as The golden forest by Angus and Robertson in 1947.
The papers include a typescript and publisher's agreement, illustrations (including the original cover), and a photograph of Noonan and Albion delivering the typescript and artwork to the publisher.
