The patchwork hero is the first book in Noonan's young adult fiction trilogy. The novel was originally written in 1951. It was published by Heinemann in 1959 and later republished in revised editions in 1981 by the Australian Broadcasting Commission and in 1990 by University of Queensland Press.

The papers comprise the 1951 typescript, galleys, proofs and revisions.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The papers were acquired by the Library from Michael Noonan in three instalments in 1979, 1992 and 1998.
