Content Summary:

A historical novel about the convict Magwitch in Charles Dickens' Great expectations, published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1982. Noonan was awarded a special purpose grant by the Literature Board of the Australia Council in 1979 to complete the research and writing of the novel. In 1982 Noonan's agent submitted a revised typescript to the ABC-TV drama department for consideration as a mini-series. In 1985 the ABC proceeded with a production 'Great expectations- the untold story', written by another scriptwriter and Noonan took legal action.

The papers include research material, drafts of the novel, publisher's correspondence, reviews and papers relating to the legal case and settlement awarded to Noonan.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The papers were acquired by the Library from Michael Noonan in three instalments in 1979, 1992 and 1998.
