Content Summary:
Tipped in is photograph of the author signed, 'Yours truly, C.J. Dennis.' At the end is series of caricatures of David Low, drawn in pencil by Hal Gye. Together with 4 pages of autograph notes by Hal Gye to Chaplin. He mentions his introduction to David Low by Edmund Fisher, when the former's first cartoons were appearing in the Bulletin. He is puzzled that whilst Low had drawn the cover for Backblock ballads and other verses , he was not asked by Dennis to do the drawings for The sentimental bloke. A very long description of Low's personality, his secretiveness, although both he and Gye shared a studio for a long time together. Writes: '...Low had good eyes - a spiritualist's eyes [it was Low who introduced Norman Lindsay to the Ouija Boards] and a large forehead. He had a small mouth and used to chew lollies secretly...Dave would have loved to look artistic...'
