The Dennis bookplate

Component identifier:
Item 99
Content Summary:

Hal Gye's original pen and ink description for a bookplate for H.F.C Dennis Collection. A beautiful drawing of Dennis's shack at Toolangi, with Mount St Leonard in the background.

This is the original pen and ink design of bookplate for the Hackston items in the Harry F. Chaplin Collection. Featuring 'James Hackston's Old Home - Black Range'. With this is the original letter sent to W.E. FitzHenry of the Bulletin 'confessing' that the identities of Hal Gye and 'James Hackston' are one and the same. Dated at Armadale 17 June 1953. Written in reply to a request to 'James Hackston' for some biographical details for a special issue of the Bulletin. For years Bill FitzHenry wrote solemn letters to James Hackston unaware that he was addressing his old pal Hal Gye. It was a pleasant little deception enjoyed by the few 'in the know'.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The collection was purchased from Harry Chaplin in 1981.
