The Gadfly Adelaide, S.A. [folio], February 14, 1906 - February 24, 1909

Component identifier:
Item 103
Content Summary:

The numbers are bound in three volumes of unequal size overall, as the page size of the magazine varied over the period of its publication. Found in at the end of Volume 3 is original pen and ink drawing by Ambrose Dyson, which had appeared in the magazine.

This set was acquired from Mr A.E. Martin, one of the original founders of the venture. One number has the signature of Beaumont Smith, also one of the founders. The number for July 31, 1907 has been omitted from the binding. This number is also missing from the Mitchell Library copy.

Although sought by collectors for its Dennis association, the magazine makes equal appeal to Lindsay collectors, for Ruby Lindsay was a prolific contributor and enlivened the pages with her youthful drawings. Other artists whose work appeared were: Will Dyson, Ambrose Dyson, Hal Gye, Syd. Ure Smith, Percy Lindsay and Will Donald.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The collection was purchased from Harry Chaplin in 1981.
