After Fitzpatrick won the Harbison Higinbotham Scholarship in 1937 with the manuscript 'An economic history of Australia 1783-1833' he submitted it to George Allen and Unwin of London where it was subsequently published in 1939 with the title British imperialism and Australia 1783-1883.
Fitzpatrick's contract and correspondence with publishers, together with an annotated typescript copy of the manuscript, publisher's proof pages and reviews form the subseries. A second edition was discussed in 1943 and 1946 but owing to "production problems" this was not completed.
