Content Summary:

Millar was appointed a Fellow in the Department of International Relations at the Australian National University in 1962. He became a Professorial Fellow in 1968 and held this position until 1990, although in the last five years he was on secondment to the University of London. He was the first Head of the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre (1966-71) and returned to that position in 1982-84.

The papers include correspondence, job applications, notes, addresses, reports on overseas visits, notes of interviews, submissions, newspaper cuttings, photocopies of articles and publications. The papers deal with Millar's appointment as a Fellow (1964), a dispute over an article in Broadside (1969), his secondment to the Department of Foreign Affairs (1979), a proposed Peace Research Institute, his resignation as Head of the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre (1984), his work in the Department of International Relations, overseas trips and job applications.

Correspondents include Sir John Crawford, Richard Boyer, R. Gerard Ward, D.A. Low, Sir Keith Waller, Malcolm Fraser, Sir Garfield Barwick and Harold Weir. Copies of many of Millar's own letters are included. There is a substantial correspondence between Millar and Robert O'Neill, who succeeded Millar as Head of the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre in 1971 and became Director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London in 1982.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The first instalment of the papers, comprising most of the articles, lectures, talks, broadcasts and book reviews, were presented to the National Library by Professor T.B. Millar in 1990. The rest of the papers were donated by his widow, Mrs Margaret Millar, and were transferred by his son Mr Jonathan Miller in 1997.
