- Stivens' novel, A Horse of air, which has as its plot an expedition in search of the rare night parrot of Central Australia, won the Miles Franklin Award in 1970. Contained in this series are papers relating to the novel, including research material, notebooks, correspondence, cuttings, maps and reviews. One correspondent is Len Beadell, who surveyed the Gun Barrel Highway in 1968-1969. There are unsigned original illustrations for the front cover of the book, which were not used, and a copy of the published book.

- The papers were purchased from Stivens in several small instalments from 1971 to 1973 and in one large instalment from Stivens' companion, Juanita Cragen, in 1999.
