Stivens was Chair of the Captain Cook Bicentenary Literary Competition, a public literary competition held as part of the Captain Cook Bicentenary celebrations in 1970. There were a number of categories to the competition, which had a total prize pool of $30,000. The papers in this series relate to the competition and comprise correspondence, agenda and minutes of meetings, reports, press statements, brochure design and judging panels.

- The papers were purchased from Stivens in several small instalments from 1971 to 1973 and in one large instalment from Stivens' companion, Juanita Cragen, in 1999.
