The bulk of the collection details Martin's tremendous literary output during the course of his career. There are papers relating to all of Martin's published works. These include notes, synopses, research material, edited drafts and reviews. There is a large collection of personal and business correspondence. Included is correspondence with family, editors, publishers and literary agents. Martin also corresponded with many well known Australian authors and included in the collection are letters from Phillip Adams, June Factor, Miles Franklin, Dame Mary Gilmore, Dorothy Hewett, Ken and Amirah Inglis, Nancy Keesing, John Manifold, Leonard Mann, Tom Inglis Moore, Pixie O'Harris, A.A. Phillips, Katharine Susannah Prichard and Kylie Tennant. Also included is a large collection of cuttings of Martin's contributions to newspapers and journals over the course of his career, dating from 1942..
Immediate source of acquisition:
The main body of David Martin Papers was acquired partly under the Taxation Incentives for the Arts Scheme and partly by outright purchase by the National Library in September 1983. Additional instalments were purchased over the period 1985-97. The papers document the long career of one of Australia's most prolific writers.
