Content Summary:

Black-and-white, mostly labelled and numbered photographs, mainly (possibly all) of Australian alps. Subjects include winter snow cover in sub-alpine woodlands (near Kiandra), Ranuncluus anemoneus (alpine area, Kosciuszko National Park), Fen community. Photos numbered as 10938-IV, 1032, 71/12/1, Pic W. Some labelling, on yellow sticky notes, includes page numbers (possibly for publication). Some photos by Colin Totterdell.

Unidentified colour negatives, numbered, unlabelled. Subjects include herbfield, open woodland, man standing in herbfield, three people in herbfield. One strip numbered 8049.

Mostly unidentified black-and-white photographs. Subjects include Mt Kosciuszko with alpine herbfield and heath; accelerated erosion of alpine herbfield initiated by sheep grazing (Kosciuszko); cattle grazing in front of snowpatch; mountains in evening or early morning; clumps of trees, lightning with leafless trees [result of bushfire?] in foreground; cattle grazing [historical photo?]. Two labelled, five numbered, four unnumbered and unlabelled. Numbering reads as follows: plates 5 and 14, 22, A38. Includes one duplicate.

Handwritten reference list mainly of publications on the Australian alps.

This large and diverse collection was compiled by Alec Costin then organised and catalogued by the eScholarship Research Centre at The University of Melbourne from 2017-2019. The collection was then transferred to the National Library of Australia in 2020.
