Subjects include trees; hebfields; helicopter near building; closeup of tussock grass; herbfield [fire damaged?] with mountains in background; trees with snow patches in background; ferns [Macrozamias?]; woman with child on flower-covered slope with mountains [Kosciusko?] in background; wooded slopes [after fire?], tall trees [after fire?]; trees [regenerating after fire?]; dense forest adjacent to water [with palm trees?]; slope with boulders, shrub and trees; Eucalypt [snow gum?] with exposed thick root; trees [some leafless] on slope amongst boulders; shrubs. Includes duplicates. Also includes one smaller duplicate of woman with child on slope, numbered C7:35 on reverse.

Black-and-white photographs mounted on paper, all labelled as "Chap 4: Costin" on front. Photos also labelled as figures 2-17 (fig 9 missing) and on reverse contain descriptions and plate labelling. Subjects include Mt Kenabalu (North Borneo); Mt. Gilmore, alpine grassland on Mt Wilhelm, Mt Giluwe (New Guinea); Mt Kosciusko, Macquarie Island (Australia); Mt Earnslaw, Central Otago, Mt Lyndon (New Zealand). Some photos also numbered on reverse as L1195-12, L103-4, L1174-3, 05091. Some photos attributed variously to M.E.D. Poore and CSIRO.

Mainly unidentified black-and-white photographs, numbered on reverse. Seven photos numbered from 10935-XI to 10937-VIII (some missing). Two photos numbered as 70/398/12 and 16768/16 (same photo also numbered as 29). Some photos labelled variously as "R.B.". One photo labelled "Plate 2: Page 176: (b) Bottom Plate". Includes one duplicate. One photo labelled as "Blue Lake: diving raft". Seven photos apparently show Blue Lake and surrounding area with divers camping and using raft. Three photos show rocks in line on ground [morraine?], tall trees, jagged peak with mountains in background. One photo attributed to R. Good.

This large and diverse collection was compiled by Alec Costin then organised and catalogued by the eScholarship Research Centre at The University of Melbourne from 2017-2019. The collection was then transferred to the National Library of Australia in 2020.
