Content Summary:
Includes cuttings, invitations, orders of service for funerals and a brochure for West's yacht. Correspondents include: Valerie, wife of Sir Ninian Stephen (Governor-General); Michael Kirby; and Jimmy Carter (US President). West was invited to attend events for/with people who include: the Queen and Prince Phillip, President Lyndon Johnson, Prime Minister Bob Hawke, President George W. Bush, the King and Queen of the Belgians, the Australian Ambassador to Thailand, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Governor of NSW, Peter Sinclair, and Barrie Unsworth, Premier of NSW. There is also ephemera relating to a testimonial dinner for West (1993) and a small print by South Australian printmaker, Janet Ayliffe
Immediate source of acquisition:
Approximately half the collection was acquired from West in a number of instalments under the Cultural Gifts Program during the period 1983 to 1992. A further large instalment of papers was donated to the Library in 2001 by West's widow, Joy, following his death in 1999. Two smaller additions were received in 2016 and 2018 from West's family.
