This novel was first published in 1986. Papers include a synopsis (1983); a manuscript draft (282pp) with the working title 'The Sydney Duck'; correspondence about possible legal issues that might arise from the content of the book and with publishers about pre and post publication issues (1983-1991); letters of appreciation from people who had received copies of the book; and reviews of both the book and the television adaptation produced by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1989.

Immediate source of acquisition:
Approximately half the collection was acquired from West in a number of instalments under the Cultural Gifts Program during the period 1983 to 1992. A further large instalment of papers was donated to the Library in 2001 by West's widow, Joy, following his death in 1999. Two smaller additions were received in 2016 and 2018 from West's family.
