Newspaper cuttings, 1881-1973 (bulk 1920-1971)
- Component identifier:
- Series 14
- Content Summary:
-
This series comprises newspaper cuttings albums and files of loose cuttings. This material has been arranged into nine subseries, beginning with the albums (14.1), followed by files of loose cuttings arranged according the region to which they primarily relate (14.2-14.8), finishing with loose cuttings relating to various topics (14.9).
Most of the albums were compiled by Braga from the 1920s until the 1940s, and these principally concern social, economic and political issues relating to Hong Kong and Macau, but topics such as other Portuguese colonies, China, general history and literature are also covered. One album is largely devoted to reporting on the public life of Braga's father, J.P. Braga. Articles by Braga and his father feature in the albums.
The loose cuttings cover the regions of Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Portugal and Portuguese colonies, including social, economic and political issues, history, geography, World War II and other matters. Many of the files of loose cuttings were added to by Braga during his time at the National Library from 1968-1972.
As well as newspaper cuttings, this series also includes some typescript transcripts of articles, together with some ephemera.
Various newspapers are represented in the cuttings, including the South China Morning Post, the China Mail, A voz de Macau, Noticias de Macau, the Hongkong Telegraph, the Hongkong Tiger Standard, the Hong Kong American, The Literary Digest, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Age and The Canberra Times.
Further newspapers and newspaper cuttings feature throughout the collection, particularly Series 15. Notes on newspapers in Macau, Hong Kong, Portugal and elsewhere are included in Braga's 'Special File' (Subseries 7.3).

- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The bulk of the Braga Collection (including manuscripts, pictures, maps, newspapers, serials, periodicals, monographs and ephemera) was purchased from J.M. Braga in 1966. The component held in the Manuscript Collection at MS 4300 appears to have been formally accessioned as the J.M. Braga Papers in 1975. Several small additions have been made since the original instalment of papers was received. Most of these additions were transfers to the Manuscripts Collection from other collection areas, including a file of newspaper cuttings in May 1975, a set of microfilm reels in 1984, a file of manuscript material in 1985, lists of the Braga Collection in 1994, and two files of assorted printed material and other papers in 2009. As well, several small additions have been made by members of the Braga family. In 1992, various Braga family members donated a copy of the eulogy and order of service for Augusta Braga's memorial service, and in 2002 Angela Braga donated photographs of medals and decorations awarded to J.P. Braga, together with photocopies of early writings of J.M. Braga and eulogies for J.M. Braga and his grandson Michael Braga.
