Component identifier:
Series 2
Content Summary:

Edwards left school at 14 to join the postal service. However, he was determined to join the Church and enrolled at Fort Street Model School, Sydney, in 1908 to complete his schooling. In 1910 he entered Moore Theological College, Newtown, and in 1913 commenced a BA at the University of Sydney, graduating in April 1916. To support himself while studying, Edwards took services at many churches around the Sydney area. Following his discharge from the AIF in England in 1918, he undertook a Teachers Certificate at Cambridge, which he was awarded in December 1918.

Contained in this series are papers relating to Edwards' education. There are certificates of achievement, an early paper on 'Original sin', two books of lecture notes (1913), a copy of his enrolment form for Moore Theological College, and copies of examination papers. There is a booklet listing alphabetically the churches at which he took services and the texts referred to at each one. This booklet indicates the enormous distances he must have travelled, listing as it does some 34 different churches at which he took services, ranging from Dapto to Picton to Springwood.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The papers of William John Edwards were donated to the Library by his son-in-law, Arthur Pulford, in 2003. The papers had been in the possession of Edwards' daughter, Jill Pulford, since 1967 and came to the Library following her death.
