Curtis Brown client files, 1969-2002
- Component identifier:
- Series 1
- Content Summary:
-
This series comprises Curtis Brown's files for represented authors. The files include a variety of records, including correspondence between authors and the agent/s, correspondence regarding the submission of books to publishers, records of ongoing relationships with publishers, records relating to publicity arrangements, press cuttings, and financial records such as agreements and royalty statements. Some files are business-like in nature, while others include more extensive and in-depth correspondence which also describes projects being worked on, and the writing process.
While some previous record keeping systems are evident, namely chronological and alphabetical arrangements, these were not clear or consistent enough to be able to be reconstructed. This series therefore has been retained in the order in which it was received at the Library. Many authors have more than one file, which are usually not co-located. The Appendix lists authors alphabetically, and can be used to identify all files relating to a particular author within the collection.
Some files include Hickson Associate records, that is for authors who were represented by Hickson Associates prior to May 1999, and thereafter transferred to Curtis Brown. These are marked accordingly in the file descriptions. Authors in this category often also have files in Series 2, which are also listed in the Appendix.
A very small amount of rearrangement has been done, only where records were loose or clearly misfiled. Any such rearrangement has been noted in the description for the file. Most original files have been retained, and have been replaced only when in poor condition. Many files were originally large, and so have been rehoused into several files.
