Newspaper cuttings, 1952-2003
- Component identifier:
- Series 14
- Content Summary:
-
The majority of cuttings in this series relate to works by Meale, or performances by him (as conductor). Some folders also include ephemera, publications, correspondence and reviews and articles on Voss.
All folders in this series, with the exception of folders 25-26, 30, 34 and 38, have been retained in the same groupings in which they were received. Folders 25-26, 30, 34 and 38 were found in other parts of the collection and were inserted into the chronological arrangement at a later date. Some of the existing folders were in small boxes, some were co-located in piles, and some were in manila folders. In some cases it was not clear whether cuttings had been grouped by Richard Meale, or by the Curator of Music at the time of packing the records.
Folders 1-14 comprise cuttings dating from the 1950s and 1960s which were kept in a series of labelled and numbered envelopes, either by Richard Meale or possibly his mother. Existing labels have been transcribed as the titles for these folders, and the original numbering has been indicated in the description for the folder. These folders also contain brief handwritten labels grouping cuttings on a particular subject.
For some of the folders, the original file title is mentioned in the notes, with the archivist preferring to give the folders a generic title.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The majority of the records appear to have been created or collected by Richard Meale. The papers were transferred to the Library in six accessions (instalments) throughout 2004, with three transferred directly from Meale. The remaining three were transferred by associates and friends of Meale - two former students and Meale's former agent, Barbara Mobbs. It does not appear that any of these custodians rearranged or added to the records during their period of custodianship. The papers from Barbara Mobbs comprise letters from Patrick White to Meale. They were received at the same time as another collection MS 10106, which also relates to Richard Meale. All six accessions were acquired from Meale in 2004. Further papers were transferred by Amanda Meale in 2010.
