Component identifier:
Series 2
Content Summary:

The position of Director was created in 1963 to strengthen the federal role of the Institute by building up closer relations between the central body and the branches and by greater use of organs of publicity to inform and influence public opinion. The Director is appointed by and responsible to the Commonwealth Council.

Functions of the Director include responsibility (in conjunction with the Treasurer) for centrally-funded financial activities and the preparation of an annual financial budget, preparation of the annual report of the Institute and the Director's biannual report, responsibility for negotiations with the outside bodies including publishers and the Australian Government, supervision of the activities of the national headquarters, handling negotiations for the selection of Dyason and Roy Milne lecturers, administration of the Foreign Affairs Club, guiding the annual national conference, handling appeals for funds, and taking initiatives to further the activities, objects and prosperity of the Institute.

An Assistant Director handles much of the routine work of the Directorate. In its early years the Directorate operated from its offices in the ANU, moving to the National Headquarters in Deakin in 1987.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The records were donated by the Institute in two instalments in 1970, 1994 and 2002. Some financial records were returned to the Institute.
