Component identifier:
Series 3
Content Summary:

The Research Section of the Institute was established in March 1940 with a grant by the Rockefeller Foundation to sponsor research into international problems through its Research Program. Since 1963 the research program was assisted by grants from the Ford Foundation. Fields of research include the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations, international law, regional problems, trade policy, defence, migration and population as well as individual countries and their problems. Most of the research program is administered through Australian universities.

The Chairman of the Research Committee is responsible (in conjunction with the Research Committee) for the Institute's Research program including the book publishing program and reports to Commonwealth Council. The Research Committee meets twice a year, generally at the same time as the Commonwealth Council.

This series contains Research Committee records relating to research projects and publications undertaken during the Chairmanships of Professors Bull and Legge.

Some records of the Research Chairman are also located in the Secretaries' files (series 1).

Immediate source of acquisition:
The records were donated by the Institute in two instalments in 1970, 1994 and 2002. Some financial records were returned to the Institute.
