A range of correspondence occurs throughout the Garland Papers. While much of it is found with related subject material, this general correspondence series contains files which fall into two groups.
(I) Congratulatory correspondence and letters of support, 1971-82
As Garland was appointed to successive ministerial positions during his parliamentary career he received congratulations from friends, political colleagues, Liberal Party branches and members of his electorate.
Congratulatory messages in this sub-series include those received on the occasions of his appointments as Minister for Supply (1971), Minister for Post and Telecommunications and Minister Assisting the Treasurer (1975), Minister for Veterans' Affairs (1977), Minister for Special Trade Representations and Minister Assisting the Minister for Trade and Resources (1978), Shadow Minister for the ACT and Public Service (1975), High Commissioner (1980) and his knighthood (1982).
Following his resignation from the Ministry in 1976, Garland received messages of support. Four files contain letters and telephone messages on this subject.
(II) Political and general correspondence, 1969-75
There are eight files of correspondence files, mostly containing letters of Garland and other politicians, although two files include letters from a small number of academics, businessmen and others. Included is correspondence with State and Federal parliamentarians, indexed (1969-72), the Prime Minister (1971-72), Labor MPs (1973-75), Country Party MPs (1975) and personal and ministerial correspondence (1971-72, 1973-76).
Papers that include correspondence between Garland and political colleagues are in Series 9.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The first instalments of the Garland Papers were presented to the Library by Victor Garland in 1975. Between 1976 and 1981 eight further instalments of papers were received from Garland's Perth electorate office and his office in Parliament House, Canberra. Further papers were received from Sir Victor in London in 1993.
