Angus and Robertson published Fly west in 1974 and it won the Australian Children's Book of the Year in 1976.
This series contains manuscripts, notes, photocopied R.A.A.F. material and correspondence. The correspondents include ex-R.A.A.F. personnel and Barbara Ker Wilson. The correspondence dating from 1993 onwards discusses the possibility of a reunion with members from Southall's R.A.A.F. squadron. This file also includes the draft acceptance speech for the Children's Book of the Year, Fly West.

- The papers were purchased by the National Library from Ivan Southall in two instalments in 1977 and 1997. Further papers were received in 2008, 2009, 2012,2013, 2015 and 2017.
