Correspondence dealing with all Wheatley's fiction books from Five times dizzy (1982) to The night Tolkien died (1993), as well as some short stories, the non-fiction works Adolescent and family problems: books for young people (1988) and Landmarks (1991), the television and stage productions of Five times dizzy and My place; and progress on Wheatley's unpublished biography of Charmian Clift.
The correspondence canvasses business matters such as writing grants, royalty payments, book awards, publishing agreements, foreign editions, editorial comments on books, permission to publish short stories, negotiations over book covers, copyright requests, public lending right payments, requests for articles and book reviews, Wheatley's comments on other writers' proposals for works, and invitations for visits, talks and book launches. The correspondence also contains a quantity of biographical information as well as comments by Wheatley on Australian juvenile fiction, the status of children's authors, politics, the Bicentenary, other children's authors works, Garry Kinnane's biography of George Johnston, and her involvement in the Unemployed People's Union in 1979-80. The 1990 and 1991 files contain some correspondence with students and the 1993 files contains a file on Wheatley's objections to the NSW Teachers' Federation's use of (and addition of a McDonalds logo to) an illustration from My place for its Year 3 Basic Skills test.

- The original consignment was purchased by the Library in 1996. Further papers were donated in 2004 and purchased in 2005, 2008 and 2017.
