Content Summary:

Included with the papers of Sir Brudenell White are those of his daughter, Rosemary, Lady Derham, most of which comprise her research for her biography of White entitled The silence ruse - escape from Gallipoli, which was published in 1998. They include correspondence with organisations and individuals, notes, journal articles, cuttings, and a microfilm reel reproducing part of the papers of Major General Sir Edward Hutton relating to White, the originals of which are held at the British Library. There are also typescript exerpts from the letters of Sir Brudenell to Lady White (1915-1916) and from his diaries (1925-1927). Correspondents include Lord Casey, Brigadier-General W.B. Leslie and Sir Thomas Blamey. There is a small group of general files which include Derham's notes for her Australian Dictionary of Biography entry on White (1994-1997), correspondence with Guy Verney and drafts of his PhD thesis on White (1978-1984) and requests from researchers to view White's papers.

Immediate source of acquisition:
The papers were acquired in several instalments from the family of Sir Brudenell White. The first large instalment was received in 1976 from White's daughter, Rosemary, Lady Derham. This was followed by small additions to the collection in 1979, 1982, 1984 and 1989. In 1999 Lady Derham added the remaining papers she held to the collection. A further small addition was received in 2003 from White's grandson, Mark Derham.
