Irian Jaya, 1976-1995
- Component identifier:
- Series 14
- Content Summary:
-
Feith took a keen interest in political and social developments in Irian Jaya, which was transferred from Dutch rule to Indonesian rule in 1963 under what was seen by many to be unjust circumstances. Files in this series contain notes, cuttings, correspondence and writings by Feith and others about issues relating to Irian Jaya and especially the fight for independence. There are papers relating to a project Feith undertook with Ian Bell to look at the roles international and transnational organizations were playing in relation to the Irian Jaya situation. There are also files relating to a 1984 seminar in Sydney entitled 'Irian Jaya - is far reaching reform possible?', at which Feith presented a paper, together with drafts, notes and correspondence of a paper entitled 'New conflict in West Irian', written by Feith, Ron Hatley and Ian Bell.
The bulk of the papers date from 1984 to 1985, a time of considerable tension in the region. Most files have the title 'Irian Jaya' and so are listed chronologically according to date range. Where available, file titles are included in the description.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The bulk of the papers were donated to the Library in 2002 by Herb Feith's widow, Betty, and his son, David Feith. Also in 2002, smaller groups of papers were donated by Professor John Legge, Dr Gerry van Klinker and Daniel S. Lev.
