Photographs of life in the Solomon Islands. Descriptions of individual photographs were compiled by Patricia Braga and are derived from the following sources: captions on the back of some photographs; the SSEM magazine Not in Vain (NIV); Pearls from the Pacific, written by Florence S.H. Young and published in 1925; and in some cases provided by Gordon Griffiths, son of the General Secretary of the SSEM, Ken Griffths.
A copy of descriptions of some of the photographs has also been been provided by Emeritus Professor Clive Moore, FAHA, Cross of Solomon Islands. He used the photographs in researching his book Making Mala : Malaita in Solomon Islands, 1870s-1930s., which was published in 2017.
Many of these photographs were published in Florence S.H.Young's book, Pearls from the Pacific, referred to here as Pearls. As this book was printed in 1925, all the photographs were taken before that date. Some were taken by Northcote Deck (identified as N. Deck) and Norman Deck (N.C. Deck).Unfortunately, negatives accompanying the photographs proved to be too damaged to be of use. However, descriptive notes on a number of the envelopes in which the negatives were housed were able to be photocopied and these photocopies have been included with the photographs in case they may be of relevance to researchers.
- Immediate source of acquisition:
- The papers were acquired from Northcote Deck's son, Dr John Deck. The transfer to the National Library of Australia was facilitated by Patricia Braga, second cousin of Dr Deck, both being descendants of Henry Young.
