WARNING. This folder contains photographs which include some images of deceased people that may cause sadness or distress to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. They also include some images of nudity. Photographs from an album relating to Donald Mackay's 1926 expedition with Herbert Basedow to Central Australia, including of expedition members; indigenous people; rock art; rock formations; camel trains and base camps. Some with Donald Mackay's annotations at rear; and some with identifying comments by NLA staff. The expedition route included: Charlotte Waters; Musgrave Ranges; Uluru (then known as Ayer's Rock); Kata Tjuta (then known as the Olgas); Mt Currie; Western Petermann Ranges; Ernabella Waterhole (back in the Musgrave Ranges); to Oodnadatta). Its members included: Donald Mackay; Herbert Basedow; Bert Oliffe; Frank Feast and three indigenous assistants, recorded as Sambo, Ronald and Jack, all Kaiditj men. Identifying comments by NLA staff were assisted by: Last of the Explorers by Frank Clune, 1942 and A Different Time The Expedition Photographs of Herbert Basedow 1903 - 1928 by David Kaus, 2008 (which includes some similar photographs). Original album from which photographs were removed is included.

The papers were acquired from the Mackay Family in 2011.
