WARNING. This folder contains photographs which include some images of deceased people that may cause sadness or distress to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Photographs and negatives from Donald Mackay's 1928 expedition to Arnhem Land with Herbert Basedow. Photographs include of: Darwin; Donald Mackay and Herbert Basedow; Chinese miners (Pine Creek); indigenous people; Arnhem Land; Oenpelli (now Gunbalanya); and expedition members. Most photographs annotated by Donald Mackay on rear. Negatives mostly different to printed photographs and include: expedition members, camps and railway station/ equipment on train. Some negatives have original handwritten tags previously pinned to them. Also includes separate printed titles for photograph presentation. The expedition went by train from Darwin to Katherine; the route then including: Mataranka; the Roper Bar; past Mt Marumba and Mt Delight to Gunbalanya (then known as Oenpelli) and onto Pine Creek. Expedition members included: Donald Mackay; Herbert Basedow; Frank Feast; Walter Scully (cinematographer) and CW Lovell.
Immediate source of acquisition:
The papers were acquired from the Mackay Family in 2011.
