Content Summary:

Selected correspondence of the Colonial Office relating to British settlement in Australasia. Until 1857 it consists of domestic letters alone. The series then ceases and is not resumed until 1872.

The material filmed by the Australian Joint Copying Project consists of despatches and their enclosures, reports and other papers from governors, domestic letters from North American and Australian commissioners, British government agencies, individuals, and emigration agents, and copies of replies.

The volumes are arranged chronologically by country or region and in the early period within categories 'Offices' and 'Settlers', and subsequently within the generic subject headings: Despatches, Offices and Individuals. Each volume has a contents lists, a precis of each letter giving the name of the correspondent, date of letter and subject matter.

The following pieces were filmed in their entirety by the Australian Joing Copying Project: 27-28, 30, 32-33, 35-36, 38-39, 42, 44-50, 53-65, 68, 70-71, 73, 76-77, 80, 82, 84-86, 90-92, 94-101, 162-163. All other pieces were filmed selectively.
