Content Summary:

War and Colonial Department and Colonial Office. Government gazettes from the colonies. Government gazettes were the official newspapers produced by most colonies and dominions.

Although the content of the gazettes varies between colonies, generally they provide information on a variety of subjects including the economy, population, government, sanitation, communications, meteorology and crime. They include minutes and proclamations by the governor; notices of appointments; the texts of ordinances and various notices, for example of sales of land and of shipping intelligence; calls for tenders and advertisements of trade marks.

Also included are notices from particular bodies, such as the Currency Commissioners and reports of the proceedings of municipal Councils. Other statistical reports may be contained which have information on births and deaths, the incidence of disease, and weather observations.

Dates used in the this finding aid refer to those of the records selected for filming by the Australian Joint Copying Project (AJCP) rather than to the date range of the original , Series or File.
