Content Summary:

The Hatton Papers are Home Office estrays. They have been copied in their entirety by the Australian Joint Copying Project.

The papers comprise petitions and letters to the King, Prince Regent and Home Secretaries from convicts or friends of convicts appealing against their sentences. The bulk of the letters (ff. 51–799) date from 1812 to 1823 and are addressed to Lord Sidmouth and Robert Peel. Other papers were sent to Lord Sydney, Lord Grenville, R. Ryder and Lord Spencer and to Home Office officials such as J. Beckett, J. Capper, G. Dawson and H. Hobhouse. There are some copies of replies.

Many of the papers refer to transportation and to New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land. Some appeals sought the commutation of death sentences to transportation, others appealed against sentences of transportation. There are requests for free passage for wives of convicts and requests for information about convicts in N.S.W. Among the correspondents are L. Macquarie (ff. 61–2), T. Davey (f. 202) and Sir Thomas Brisbane (ff. 761–2).

Dates used in the this finding aid refer to those of the records selected for filming by the Australian Joint Copying Project (AJCP) rather than to the date range of the original Series or File.
