The papers filmed by the Australian Joint Copying Project relate primarily to Cardwell's period as Secretary of State for War, but also include two items from his term at the Colonial Office.

Papers filmed include correspondence and memoranda from Cardwell while he was Secretary of State for War. The papers cover withdrawal or retention of Imperial troops in the colonies, issue of medals for the New Zealand and Abyssinian campaigns and the appointment of Commandants. As Secretary of State for Colonies Cardwell received congratulations on his role in the New Zealand war. Earlier correspondence discusses the Smith O'Brien case.
