- Content Summary:
-
This Series includes original despatches, letters and papers from Governors of Colonies, Departments, etc., to the Secretary-at-War, and after 1855 to the Secretary of State for War. The correspondence relevant to Australia and New Zealand, which has been filmed, covers the period 1841-1855. Correspondence before 1841 is to be found largely in the Colonial Office Records.
The Pieces filmed deal with matters such as pay and allowances for troops, the construction of barracks and other buildings, and the defence of the Colonies. Other subjects of note are the transportation to Western Australia of soldiers convicted under court martial (1854), the transference of the Australian Command to Melbourne in 1853, and the validity of courts martial of Maoris under military law.
All Pieces have been copied in full.
