This Series includes letters dealing with forces stationed in the Australian Colonies and New Zealand. Included is discussion on the size of forces to be maintained, equipping of troops, military appointments and allocation of finance for the construction of barracks and other military buildings. There is mention of the possibility of discharging troops in Australia, and subsequent encouragement for them to settle. The diminution of convicts in Van Diemen's Land and reduction of the size of the garrison there is also recorded, and the fact that it was formally discontinued as a convict station in 1853. The designation 'Australian Forces-Tasmania' also appears for the first time.
The Australian Joint Copying Project filmed Pieces 96, 97, 101 in full; all other Pieces were filmed selectively.
