Journal kept by Hope on the voyage from Sydney to Plymouth on the General Hewitt, 1851-02-17
- Component identifier:
- File 3
- Content Summary:
- The General Hewitt left Sydney on 26 January 1851, but Hope commenced his journal on 17 February when the ship was sailing eastwards across the Pacific towards Cape Horn. Apart from the first few entries, which summarise the first weeks of the voyage, the entries are very brief, mainly recording the position of the ship, weather conditions, winds and the sighting of other ships. There are a few references to animals and birds being transported to England, including the task of exercising emus. The journal appears to have been written on the blank pages in a book that had been used to record details of flowers and other botanical specimens. Each page of the journal is followed by a page of botanical notes, with occasional variations.
