The journal is very detailed and describes the voyage from England to Australia, surveying operations in Bass Strait, the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait, the exploring expedition of E. Kennedy, attacks by natives, visits to Port Essington, relations with Capt. O. Stanley, Lieut. C. Yule, J. MacGillivray. There are also recipes for food and medicine, tables on temperatures and winds, deep sea soundings, copies of papers on the funderal of O. Stanley in 1850, and copies of papers on farming near Monte Video in 1853-1957. (214 pp.)
