Admiralty enclosures, May 1844-September 1845
- Component identifier:
- File MS 2413
- Content Summary:
- The enclosures contain inter alia extensive papers relating to expeditions by ships of the East Indies Squadron to Borneo between 1843 and 1846. Largely at the instigation of James Brooke, the de facto governor of Sarawak, British warships attacked the strongholds of Dayak pirates. In 1845 Cochrane himself led eight ships which destroyed the stronghold at Malludu (Marudu) Bay. He returned in July 1846 and attacked Brunei. In subsequent negotiations with the Sultan, Labuan was ceded to Britain. The documents include those that relate to Australia, South East Asia, and the Pacific.
