Content Summary:
Alfred Emmott (1858-1926), 1st Baron Emmott (created 1911), was the son of an Oldham cotton manufacturer. A graduate of London University, he became a partner and eventually managing director of the family business. He was mayor of Oldham in 1891. In 1899 he was elected as a Liberal member of the House of Commons and he was chairman of committees from 1906 to 1911. He was parliamentary undersecretary at the Colonial Office (1911-14) and led a delegation of the Empire Parliamentary Association to the four British dominions in 1913. He was appointed the first commissioner of works in 1914, but left the cabinet in 1915 to be the director of the war trade department. After the War he devoted most of his time to his business interests.
