Abstract Or Scope
This collection of Australian outdoor cartes de visite documents rural and urban Australia from the 1860s through to the 1890s and includes images of exteriors of homes and businesses, highlighting the unique architectural styles of the period. The architectural styles range from rural thatched-roofed slab huts to elaborate homes in city suburbs. There are photographs of business exteriors that show rarely documented subjects including a horse bazaar, plumber, and chemist, and which also document the occupants of the premises standing outside wearing the various fashions and working clothes of the time. The collection also includes images of women and children outside of the home and the fashions of the time. Photographers include Beaufoy Merlin, Charles Nettleton, Samuel Clifford, John Degotardi, Thomas Chevalier, Alfred Bock, J.P. Lind and a variety of photographic studios including the American Australasian Photographic Company.
