Letter from Bennelong to Mr Phillips, 1796-08-29

The author of this letter is Bennelong, a leader of the Wangal people. In December 1792, Bennelong and Yemmerrawanne became the first Indigenous Australians to travel to England. In the letter Bennelong mentions his wife and another Indigenous man named Carroway, and passes on his thanks to Mr and Mrs Phillips for looking after him. The manuscript records the earliest known piece of writing by an Indigenous Australian, and is the only contemporary copy of a dictated letter which appears to have been copied verbatim by an unknown scribe. Dated Sydney Cove, New South Wales, 29th August, 1796. Signed 'Bannelong'.

One letter from Wesleyan missionary Reverend Stephen Rabone to his parents, written 3 October 1835 at Hobart, Van Diemens Land. The letter includes a description of convict chain gangs, their dress, their punishment and Rabone's compassionate horror at their treatment; a description of agriculture in the Hobart region; discussion of fellow missionary Reverend Nathaniel Turner's offer to teach Rabone some Tongan prior to Rabone taking up a mission at Tonga; a description of Governor George Arthur and how he visited Turner and Rabone's chapel several times; and mention of his wife, Eliza's, pregnancy.

Letter, 31st May, 1836, to his father, written for Birkby by William Hutchinson - re (a) Voyage to Port Jackson, 1834. (b) His work with the Surveyor-General, as overseer at the Surveyor's farm at Cataract and Nepean Rivers, and as overseer of a farm in Sydney (c) Description of conditions of employment in the Colony, wages, the price of provisions, tobacco, clothing and livestock. He describes the country, its insects, birds and reptiles. He devotes several paragraphs to the treatment of the convicts and lists their allowances of clothing and food.
