The papers in the collection were accumulated over the course of Mitchell's long life and career. There are drafts of nearly all her published works, including for The silver brumby, letters from many fans of her writings, correspondence with publishers, reviews of her published works and a large group of royalty statements. Of particular interest are lengthy runs of informative letters from two of her early literary mentors, Judith Wright and her cousin, Ethel Anderson. There is also a large collection of black and white photographs and negatives of the Australian alpine landscape dating from the 1930s-1940s.

This collection comprises letters, poems and cards as well as newsletters and certificates relating to Fodla (nee Quilligan) and Frank MacKeown's involvement in Irish republican movement during 1901-1985. Many letters in this collection were sent by Francis (Frank) James MacKeown (1884-1944), the first Secretary of the Irish National Association, to Frank's wife, Fodla. There are letters from Darlinghurst Detention Barracks where Frank was jailed along with the Darlinghurst Seven members, who also sent Fodla poetry. Receipts relating to Daniel Noonan and Frank's burial support the idea that Fodla was working with Ravens Funeral Directors Service to funnel funds to IRA in Ireland. Official documents include Frank's arrest warrant, formal permission certificate for Fodla to visit him in detention as well as the McKeown's marriage certificate. Correspondence sent by others associated with Irish republican movement, including the Australian Aid for Ireland organisation and Cathal Goulding of the Irish Republican Arm (IRA). Letters highlight Fodla's involvement describing her as the 'Chief in the Irish Republican cause' and identify her as member of Sinn Fein and Cumann na mBan. Other items include four copies of 'Songbooks and recitations of Ireland', a music recording of 'The Soldier's song' on compact disc and vinyl, a black and white photograph of Fodla, a hand embroidered cloth bookmark and a gold Sinn Fein pin.

There is considerable overlap between material on University-based student groups and left-wing political movements generally. The main focus is on Victorian (La Trobe University) material, however several States and the Australian Capital Territory are well represented.
